This year, I am inviting the Switch Witch over to my house, how about you?
Now, don't tell me you've never heard of the Switch Witch? Let me introduce her to you and she can make a quick stop to your house this year!
Like Santa or the Tooth Fairy, the Switch Witch visits children while they sleep and leaves a prize. But in this case the prize makes parents happy too, because she swaps it for that overflowing sack of Halloween candy.
On Halloween night, kids throughout the country will have one goal in mind: They will collect a LOT of candy. But little do they know, its not all for them. Its true, some of the candies will be consumed by them, but a good chuck of it will be collected for the Switch Witch.
After the kids have drifted off the sleep, the Switch Witch visits and collects the candy left for her by the children and she switches it out with a toy! The beauty of the Switch Witch story is that you can adapt it to your family's needs. The prize doesn't have to be extravagant, or expensive, especially for the youngest trick-or-treaters. Consider stickers, crayons, shiny coins, any dollar store item roughly equivalent to the amount of candy traded. You can get away with spending very little. Win all around!
The Switch Witch helps reduce the amount of candy to a more manageable amount. Of course, you can still allow your children to indulge as much as you would like on Halloween night, or to reserve as much as you'd like for snacking on in the coming days... but, it also allows you to stash some away for yourself, or to donate to a good cause, such as Operation Gratitude or a Halloween Candy Buy Back at a local dentist's office.
The Halloween Candy Buyback buys candy from children after Halloween. We get candy off of the streets and send it in care packages to troops overseas. Here are a list of local dentists participating in the Halloween Candy Buy Back program.
