Making it big just by being yourself

While all of my daughter’s friends were excited about Valentine’s Day and getting special valentines’ from their friends, my daughter was ecstatic about getting a glimpse of American Girl’s new doll, Tenney Grant. (Debut on February 16th) We were thrilled to receive Tenney Grant, a 18" doll with light brown eyes that open and close, freckles on her nose, and long, curly blond hair. She came dressed with an adorable denim vest, faux- leather skirt and stylish ankle boots. Many have mentioned that she looks a lot like Taylor Swift, and I couldn’t agree more!

“I love to write songs and play my guitar. And folks
around Nashville are starting to take notice. I'm
going to make it big as a musician—and do it by just
being myself.”
- Tenney Grant

Tenney's biggest dream is to share what's in her heart through music. Little does she know, she's about to get the opportunity of a lifetime. When Tenney gets invited to perform solo at Nashville's famed Bluebird Cafe, the pressure is on to write the song that will show what she's made of. But then Tenney's parents decide that she's too young to perform professionally, leaving her future hanging in the balance. What if this is Tenney's only chance to make her dreams come true?"

What I love most about American Girl dolls is the beauty and detail of each doll that is authentically crafted. Since Tenney is a musician, she comes with unique hand positioning that helps her hold her guitar, banjo, and pick! (Instruments and pick sold separately)

Tenney’s story touches on the idea of being authentic; true to yourself, to your own sound, to own your voice - and being held accountable to what you contribute to the world. In the story, Tenney Grant is a kid who is a legitimately talented songwriter and artist who is determined to make music straight from her heart. However, her parents think she is too young to perform professionally and wanted to protect her from all the drawbacks of the entertainment business. As a parent, the tension between wanting to support my child in everything she wants to achieve, and yet at the same time wanting to protect them from failure, experiencing loss, and getting hurt emotionally really touched me to the core.

I loved the story about a child who has a passion for something, that she is really good at doing, while staying true to who they are. Also, the determination to find success while dealing with setbacks and the simple struggles of growing up. I know my daughter has big dreams like many other kids her age and I know she can relate to Tenney Grant. With such a powerful inspiring story, I applaud how American Girl has created a doll with big dreams and aspirations and has her work to find the heart and courage to seek her own voice and to write and sing her own songs.
