For months, my 7 year old has struggled with spelling. It’s the one subject as a homeschool parent that can be very frustrating. I teach and go over spelling words daily but there is always resistance. Of course, there are a wide range of reasons that can cause resistance with learning how to master spelling words. It’s also possible that my child needed more time and a different approach (and more patience perhaps) with learning her sight words. For the past few weeks, I was at my breaking point.
We received a copy of Heidi Songs Volume 1-6 Sight Words DVD, a collection of award winning sight word songs that were specifically written to help children memorize the spellings of the most commonly used high frequency words. Sight words, or "high frequency words", are words that are seen most commonly in children's books and other print. Sight words are an important building block for early readers because they make up much of what a child will encounter when reading any book, worksheet or environmental print.
We decided to focus on 2-3 sight words a week, focusing on singing and remembering the songs throughout the week. After the first few days, something amazing happened. With the catchy song and delightfully animated images, my daughter started to spell the words on her own as she was doing her writing homework. When she needed to spell one of the sight words, that she had been struggling with for the past months, she quietly sang the song each time and was able to master it all on her own!
What I love about the program is that my daughter is learning spelling words WITHOUT realizing she is ACTUALLY learning them (Bye-Bye resistance). Heidi Songs Volume 1-6 Sight Words DVDs was the one thing that reached her and unlocked her newfound love of spelling. The songs are easy to follow and also incorporate dance moves that helps with memorization. We loved the collection of words that allowed us to customize a spelling list for her for the week, allowing us to move at her pace.
Heidi Songs believes in teaching through multi-sensory learning. Seeing the words and visuals, moving with the hand motions, and singing the songs. The more senses a child uses will significantly increase how much they learn and will ultimately result in a stronger retention of that information!
