MacKid Review of OCTONAUTS LIVE!

By Kathy E, MK Arcadia Publisher & Guest Writer Nicole Chan October 14, 2016
"Explore! - Rescue! - Protect!"

The Octonauts are a team of undersea adventurers who are always ready to dive into action! Their mission is to explore new underwater worlds, rescue amazing sea creatures and protect the ocean.  This is exactly what you get on this amazing show that is targeted to toddlers 0-6yrs old and older kids/adults that are fan of the Octonauts!  The 2 hour theater adventure features the entire crew that any Octonaut fan is familiar with: Captain Barnacles, Lieutenant Kwazii Kitten, Peso Penguin, Dashi (Sauci) Dog, Tweak Bunny, Professor Inkling Octopus, Shellington Sea Otter and Tunip the Vegimal!

I was very impressed by the character’s costumes- being fully covered head to toe. Every detail was thought of in making the characters more authentic- including the distinct accent from each character on the show! The stage was created and set up to recreate the actual TV show, with the interior look of the Launch Bay. They recreated Captain Barnacles’ entire control center with, of course, the original alarm system sound when calling all of the Octonauts to the rescue!

My kids were totally engaged by the life-size Octonauts characters, the human character that was interacting with the public and the puppets that were used for the sea creatures!  The kids pretend to maneuver the underwater vehicle using body movements and sing and help the Octonauts complete their mission.  There was a right balance of drama and comedy which kept them interested.  The plot revolved around volcano rescue and similar to their TV show, you get to see and learn about some of the sea creatures.

My favorite scene was with the deep-sea creature puppets that moved with the blacked out stage and the UV costumes. Their fluid movements really make the sea creatures appear life-like and added to the fascinating appeal of these amazing sea creatures.

The show is geared towards younger children and they loved seeing their favorite characters come to life. Each set was about 30 minutes long, with a short intermission, just enough time to grab a quick snack and a potty break. The show is just the right length for these young viewers. The entire show gripped my children’s imagination and amazement and encouraged them to appreciate live theater.
